And after a pandemic that confined us to our homes and deprived us of our loved ones, Man, in his senseless cruelty, has decided it is now time for war. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine, to all the children…may they all be safe soon.

La luna di Kiev
di Gianni Rodari

Chissà se la luna
di Kiev
è bella
come la luna di Roma,
chissà se è la stessa
o soltanto sua sorella…
“Ma son sempre quella!
– la luna protesta –
“non sono mica
un berretto da notte
sulla tua testa!
Viaggiando quassù
faccio lume a tutti quanti,
dall’India al Perù,
dal Tevere al Mar Morto,
e i miei raggi viaggiano
senza passaporto”.
The moon in Kyiv
by Gianni Rodari

Who knows if the moon
in Kyiv
is as amazing
as the one in Rome,
who knows if it’s the same moon
or perhaps just a sibling…
“But it’s me, it’s me you’re seeing!”
– it heartily protests–
“did you think
I was a night cap
for wearing on your head?
And travelling up here
I shed light on one and all,
from India to Zaire
from the Tiber to the Dead Sea,
my rays need no passport
to travel freely.”
