l’attesa

Roberta De Piccoli

nel tempo dove il cielo
è rigato di melograno
e il mirtillo annacqua i fiumi,

il vento impercettibile
odora oltre la porta:
è consuetudine l’attesa

e indosserà abiti
smeraldo, a primavera.
lascia che io ascolti

il crepuscolo sommesso
della luna, sottile
come bolle di sapone,

canta pena a pena. qui
il tappeto e il sofà sono
saturi d’inverno e

nessuna carta, bianca
o di caratteri piena,
lo annuncerebbe meglio.

the wait

Roberta De Piccoli

in a time where the sky
is lined in pomegranate
and bilberry waters the rivers,

the wind imperceptible
senses a scent at the threshold:
the wait is disposition

and will don clothes
of emerald, in spring.
let me give heed to

the hushed dusk
of the moon, as delicate
as the thin film of bubbles,

sings the sting. here
the rug and the couch are
brimming with winter and

no sheet, blank
or with letters full,
could announce it better.

The poem, written by ©Roberta De Piccoli (March 5, 2019), was initially in English. The author then “turned” it into Italian, making the inevitable changes a poet makes when juggling with sounds and syllables. I restored the original voice, the English one, with the guidance of a fine musical ear: Roberta’s. Much was lost in translation, much was found in friendship. – M.C.
