A friend of mine, a restorer, who worked on one of Fontana’s paintings told me that in the back, behind each slash, there is a sort of pod, which increases the effect of being drawn into the depths, of losing oneself in that darkness. This poem by Marta Lo Brano reminded me of this painting, of being drawn into the darkness, and yet of resisting, resisting the black depths, whatever those may be for each and every one of us. I have chosen the painting in green, because green fills me with hope.- M.C.
