Zingari, un’estate

Erri De Luca

colonne incamminate diventare colonne verticali

In piena estate diventammo nebbia coralline.

Ci tratteneva in basso la musica suonata e stracantata

Gypsies, one summer

Erri De Luca

From the barracks in the Zigeuner Camp we saw the Jews

moving columns becoming vertical columns

of smoke straight to the sky, they were lissome

they were going to swell the eyes and nose

of their God gazing down.

We were not light.

The ashes of the bodies of the gypsies

were not able to ascend to the sky of Upper Silesia.

In the heart of summer we became coral mist.

We were weighed down by music performed and oversung

around the fires in the camps,

privet of accordion and of dances,

the music we invented every night of the world

wouldn’t let us go.

We who played with no music sheet, were closed

within the bars of a pentagram of barbed wire.

We gypsies of Europe, of heavy ash

with no destination of life beyond

by no God summoned to bear witness

unacquainted instinctively with sacrifice

burned without the scent of sanctity

without the organic residue of subsequent sympathy,

we burned in one piece, guitars with their gut strings.
