I colori dei mestieri

Gianni Rodari

Io so i colori dei mestieri:

sono bianchi i panettieri,

s’alzan prima degli uccelli

e han farina nei capelli;

sono neri gli spazzacamini,

di sette colori son gli imbianchini;

gli operai dell’officina

hanno una bella tuta azzurrina,

hanno le mani sporche di grasso:

i fannulloni vanno a spasso,

non si sporcano nemmeno un dito,

ma il loro mestiere non è pulito.

The colour of labour

Gianni Rodari

I know the colour of labour:

it’s white just like the baker,

who awakes before the birds

and has flour in his beard;

black just like the chimney-sweep,

in seven colours is the painter deep;

and the labourer in the factory

has wonderful gear in navy,

has hands covered in grease:

while the slacker just wanders the streets,

not a finger does he stain,

but his work is anything but clean.
