Se domanda agli amici italiani, Le diranno che posso tradurre bene. Ora è da sette anni che non traduco più. Da quando posso vivere diversamente. Ma prima ho tradotto dall’inglese per dieci anni, era il mio modo di guadagnarmi da vivere sotto il fascismo, quando, divenuto antifascista, non potevo avere altro genere di lavoro che mi fosse permesso. Imparai l’inglese con l’aiuto di un mio compagno operaio che lo conosceva, quando lavoravo in una tipografia come operaio io stesso. Il mio modo di tradurre fu apprezzato perché rendevo lo scrittore come se avesse scritto in italiano direttamente.

If you ask my Italian friends, they will tell you that I translate well. It’s been seven years now that I have stopped translating. From the moment, that is, I could make a living differently. But I translated from English to Italian for ten years; it was how I made a living under the fascist regime when, as an antifascist, I could do no other type of job. I learned English with the help of a fellow labourer who knew the language, while working together in a print shop. My way of translating was much appreciated because I made the author sound as if he had written directly in Italian.
