Stella cadente

Margherita Guidacci

Alcuni desideri si adempiranno
altri saranno respinti. Ma io
sarò passata splendendo
per un attimo. Anche se nessuno
mi avesse guardata
risulterebbe ugualmente giustificato –
per quel lucente attimo – il mio esistere.

Non voglio

Tutti i vostri strumenti hanno nomi bizzarri
e difficili, ma io vedo chiaro
e so che in fondo sono solamente
metri e gessetti con cui misurate
e segnate – segnate e misurate
senza stancarvi.

Sfilate spilli di tra le labbra, come una sarta:
me li appuntate sull’anima
e dite: “Qui faremo un bell’orlo.
Dopo starai tanto meglio”.

Falling star

Margherita Guidacci

Some wishes will come true
others will be dismissed. But I
will have passed shining
for an instant. Even if no one
happened to see me
it would be justified all the same —
for that glittery moment — my being.

I don’t want

All your instruments have bizarre
difficult names, but I see clearly
and know that in the end they are merely
tapes and wax with which to measure
and mark — measuring and marking
without ever growing tired.

You remove pins from your lips like a seamstress:
and you fix them to my soul
and say: “We’ll make a nice hem here.
You’ll feel so much better then.”

I don’t want you to cut away a piece of my soul!
If I have too much of it to enter your world,
well then, I don’t want to enter it.

I am a poet: a butterfly, a delicate human being, with wings.
If you tear them, I will wriggle on the earth,
but not for this reason will I become
a blissful and disciplined ant.
