Giardini

Mario Luzi

E di visi una nuvola errabonda
tra gli alberi notturni senza pace
negli intimi cammini ti seconda
ancora, e ancora tace, terra, quando
il tuo lume languisce, nelle chiostre
appena il vento mormora;
e l’eterno respiro delle fonti
segue la muta schiera ove la portano
i neri passi labile e travolti
che non lasciano impronte.

Poi all’improvviso il vuoto apparirà
dagli occhi che convergono nell’Orsa
quando di là da un velo di stanchezza
ciascuno cercherà la propria stella
in un canto del cielo, impallidito
il ricordo cadrà trafitto all’orlo
della vita trascorsa,
oh non sopporteremo più l’incanto!
Ma ancora come in sogno senza piangere
questa ridda d’immagini profonda
nelle tenebre e tace.

Gardens

Mario Luzi

And of faces a wandering cloud
among the nocturnal trees unquiet
along intimate paths guides you
still, and is still quiet, earth, when
your light languishes, in the cloisters
as the wind murmurs;
and the eternal breath of the founts
follows the mute throng where it is led
by black steps labile and trounced
which leave no prints.

Then suddenly the void will appear
from the eyes that converge in the Ursa
when beyond a veil of weariness
each will search out their own star
in a hymn of the heavens, paled
the memory will fall pierced at the edge
of life spent,
oh we will no longer bear the enchantment!
But still like in sleep without tears
this jumble of images plummets
into the darkness and is quiet.
