This poem by Edoardo Sanguinetti is from the collection “Purgatorio de l’Inferno” in Triperuno, 1964.
What we have is a criticism of the alienation and inhumanity of capitalism, simple and to the point. We have a father, a son, and the words of everyday life. As they leaf through the pages of the child’s textbook with its display of historical events, figures, and facts, as they look at the cluttered desk, one thing becomes clear: it is money alone— the thirst for money, the importance given to money— that drives Man. And once that is clear, there is nothing left to learn, nothing.
