Questa felicità promessa o data

m’è dolore, dolore senza causa

o la causa se esiste è questo brivido

che sommuove il molteplice nell’unico

come il liquido scosso nella sfera

di vetro che interpreta il fachiro.

Eppure dico: salva anche per oggi.

Torno torno le fanno guerra cose

e immagini su cui cala o si leva

o la notte o la neve

uniforme del ricordo.

This joy promised or bestowed

is pain, pain without cause

or, if cause exists, it is this spasm

that rouses the multiples in the whole

quivering like liquid in the glass

of the mystic’s sphere.

And yet I say: safe again today.

Storming in from all sides are things

and images on which the night

or the snow falls or appears

unvarying in my memory.

Mario Luzi, born in Tuscany in 1914, is famous for his poetry. He was a professor at the University of Florence and published numerous works throughout the 20th century. Winner of numerous literary prizes, in 1991 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
