Crepuscolo ferrarese

Corrado Govoni

Ferrara dusk

Corrado Govoni

The tabby stretches on the sill
yawning into glass that’s tear-filled.

In the mossy terracotta pots
geraniums refresh violet buds.

The billowing bedroom curtain
moves its roses of fine muslin.

Portraits holding countless stories
are displayed in rays of memories.

On the calm of the ornate psyche
the light looks like a sunken ferry.

On the roof of a nearby church
a weathercock on top of a perch

flaps its wings like a tiny bird
whose feet are caught in a tether.

High, in the sky, o’er the city walls
fantastic kites perform summersaults.

Swallows are whispering in their beds.
A cricket’s cry sounds in the garden.

The heavens wrap in a golden net
the earth like a singing insect.

In that mirror, in the yellow froth
an octopus of light floats to the top.

Sorrow finds support against a backrest
while the churches cradle the darkness.

The poem describes a normal landscape at dawn.

By making lists, the poet goes from the inside to the outside, listing colours, sounds, various images and the distracted observations of a bystander.  The sensorial data enriches the sensations, making the text a vivid web of bold and unusual connections.

The poem is from the collection: C. Govoni, Fuochi d’artificio, in Poesia italiana del Novecento, Einaudi Ed.
