Crepuscolo ferrarese

Corrado Govoni The tabby stretches on the sill In the mossy terracotta pots The billowing bedroom curtain Portraits holding countless stories On the calm of the ornate psyche On the roof of a nearby church flaps its wings like a tiny bird High, in the sky, o’er the city walls Swallows are whispering in their beds. The heavens wrap in a golden net In that mirror, in the yellow froth Sorrow finds support against a backrest Translation ©Matilda Colarossi 2018 |
The poem describes a normal landscape at dawn.
By making lists, the poet goes from the inside to the outside, listing colours, sounds, various images and the distracted observations of a bystander. The sensorial data enriches the sensations, making the text a vivid web of bold and unusual connections.
The poem is from the collection: C. Govoni, Fuochi d’artificio, in Poesia italiana del Novecento, Einaudi Ed.
