Mare

Giovanni Pascoli

Vedo stelle passare, onde passare:
Ponte gettato sui laghi sereni,
per chi dunque sei fatto e dove meni?

Sea

Giovanni Pascoli

I look out the window and there is the sea:
stars all in flight, waves all a tremor.
I see stars go past me, waves go past me:
a glint calls out, a throb then answers.
The water sighs, there’s a breath of wind:
floating on the sea appears a silver bridge.
Bridge flung over the lakes serene,
for whom were you built and where do you lead?
