Firenze (Uffizii)

Dino Campana

Entro dei ponti tuoi multicolori
L’Arno presago quietamente arena
E in riflessi tranquilli frange appena
Archi severi tra sfiorir di fiori

…………………

Azzurro l’arco dell’intercolonno
trema rigato tra i palazzi eccelsi:
Candide righe nell’azzurro: persi
Voli: su bianca gioventù in colonne.
Florence (Uffizi)

Dino Campana

Between your bridges of many colours
The Arno I presage quietly banks
And in cool reflections it lightly laps
Stark arches amid the fading flowers

  …………………

Azure the arch of the intercolumns
trembles lined among the superb structures:
Candid lines across the azure: lost
Flights: on white adolescents in columns.

By Dino Campana, from Canti Orfici, 1914

Dino Campana was my first poet in translation: I was doing a travel catalogue of  Campana’s birthplace, of the territory and the countryside and woods he travelled everyday on his wanderings. Among the descriptions of the trails, there was one of his poems describing the landscape. I translated the poem: It was the start of something I could do all day every day.
