così, senza saperlo, come Dio vuole…

Perhaps I shivered as of ice do the stars

Franco Loi

Perhaps I shivered as of ice do the stars,
not with cold, not with fear,
not with pain, with delight or hope,
but with the nothingness that sweeps the sky
and breathes onto the grateful earth…
Perhaps it was as the heart does shiver,
yours, when at night the moon departs,
or morning comes and it seems the light does die
and it is life that returns to life…
Perhaps it was as we do shiver together,
simply, unknowingly, as God wills it…

Franco Loi was an important writer, poet, and literary critic. Born in Genoa to Sardinian parents in 1930,  he was raised in Milan. He was a great promoter of poetry in dialect. Much of his poetry is, in fact, written in the *dialect of Milan. The poem is from “Lünn” (1982).

*Forsi û tremâ cume de giass fa i stèll
