La palma della mano
i datteri non fa,
sulla pianta del piede
chi si arrampicherà?

Non porta scarpe il tavolo,
su quattro piedi sta:
il treno non scodinzola
ma la coda ce l’ha.

Anche il chiodo ha una testa,
però non ci ragiona:
la stessa cosa capita
a più d’una persona.

but it produces no dates;
and a foot has a sole
but does it rise to the bait?

A table wears no shoes,
yet it stands on four legs;
a train has a tail.
and yet it doesn’t wag.

Even the nail has a head,
but no power of reason:
the same thing can be said
of many a person.
