Giuseppe Unagretti

Gentile
Ettore Serra
poesia
è il mondo l’umanità
la propria vita
fioriti dalla parola
la limpida meraviglia
di un delirante fermento

Quando trovo
in questo mio silenzio
una parola
scavata è nella mia vita
come un abisso

Leave-taking

Giuseppe Ungaretti

Dear
Ettore Serra
poetry
is the world humanity
one’s own life
sprung from the word
the limpid wonder
of a delirious ferment

When I find
in this silence of mine
a word
burrowed it is in my life
like an abyss

Translation ©Matilda Colarossi 2018

The poem “Leave-taking” closes the first edition of the collection “Il porto Sepolto”, entitled “Poesia”. It is fundamental for the understanding of Ungaretti’s relationship with words.

There is no punctuation in this “Letter” to his good friend from the front. The definition of poetry here is, for the author, humanity, and the ability to make what we have in our hearts grow, blossom: words that spring from deep within us and become life. Soul searching, delving into the abyss of our being to discover what lies there in order to rise up again.
