Weeks slipping under,
winter,
the sink of chill,

a plain burning
widening into space—
the park made stubble,

patches of stalks of tall once-flora.
What were they,
now fallen over themselves.

How seemingly
lonely.
And so I saw the rush:

the bright cardinal
flee for life,
to hide from my bike chain’s din.

And further on: a small
company flashing
soft near-red under-wing.

How could I have had no idea
of this harbor. But it is here,
it is now and has been here
and I am changed.

Settimane sfuggenti,
l’inverno,
l’affondo del gelo,

una piana bruciante
si espande nello spazio –
il parco diventato stoppia,

toppe di steli di ciò che è stata flora.
Qualunque cosa fosse
adesso è ripiegata su se stessa.

Quanta apparente
solitudine.
E là colsi lo slancio:

radioso il cardinale
fugge in salvo,
scompare allo strepitio della mia bici.

E più oltre: minuscola
una congrega lucente
di sotto-ali- rosseggianti.

Come ho potuto non avere idea
di un tal riparo. Ma è qui,
è ora ed è stato qui
e io sono cambiata.
