Mandate a dire all’imperatore

Pierluigi Cappello

nulla nessuno in nessun luogo mai
Vittorio Sereni

Così come oggi tanti anni fa
mandate a dire all’imperatore
premerete sentieri vastissimi
vasti da non avere direzione
e accorderete la vostra durezza
alla durezza dello scorpione
alla ruminazione del cammello
alla fibra di ogni radice
liscia, la stella liscia, del vostro sguardo
staccato dall’occhio, palpiterà
né zenit né nadir
in nessun luogo, mai.

Go tell the emperor

Pierluigi Cappello

nothing no-one nowhere ever
Vittorio Sereni

And like today so many years ago
go tell the emperor
that all the wells have dried
and shining is the stone left by the water
direct your prows within the drought
for we’re going to have to walk in the dark of the word
the linen hem against our shins
and, held merely by a heartbeat
the sun in our eyes, the red beneath our eyelids
you will tread on the vastest paths
so vast they have no direction
and you will accord your harshness
with the harshness of the scorpion
with the rumination of the camel
with the fibre of each root
smooth, the star smooth, of your glance
separate from your eye, it will beat
neither zenith nor nadir
nowhere, ever.
