Felicità raggiunta, si cammina

Eugenio Montale

Felicità raggiunta, si cammina
per te sul fil di lama.
Agli occhi sei barlume che vacilla,
al piede, teso ghiaccio che s’incrina;

Happiness achieved, one walks

Eugenio Montale

.

Happiness achieved, one walks
for you on the razor’s edge.
To the eyes you are but flickering light,
to the foot, taut ice that crackles;
and to those who love you, banned touch.

If you reach the souls vexed
by sorrow and lift them, your morning
is as sweet as moving as a nest on a cornice.
But nothing soothes the tears of the child
whose ball is lost among the houses.
